We all know at least one person who has been taking either fish oil capsules or pure fish oil as long as we have known them. The benefits of taking fish oil can’t be undermined. From providing the body with essential fatty acids to even reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, the benefits of taking fish oil are numerous. That said, fish oil now has some competition in the form of krill oil.

For some of us, it may be a new type of oil but it has been on the market for some time now with essentially the same benefits as fish oil. However, there are a few fundamental differences between the two which are discussed below!

Sources of Krill and Fish Oil

One of the fundamental differences between the two oils is their source. Fish oil is derived from fatty fish such as anchovies, mackerel, and salmon while tiny shrimp-like crustaceans called Antarctic krill provide us with krill’s oil. Since it has its origin from crustaceans, people who have shell-fish allergies should avoid krill’s oil.

Absorption of Krill and Fish Oil

Though both krill and bioglan super fish oil contain the same omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), fatty acid absorption is much more efficient with krill oil. The reason is that fatty acids in krill’s oil are bound to phospholipids. This allows for their easy release into the bloodstream and cells.

On the other hand, omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil are bound to triglycerides which release these fatty acids at a slower and less efficient rate.

Presence of Nutrients

Although primarily both krill and fish oil are used for their beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system, krill’s oil goes a step ahead of fish oil when it comes to extra nutrients. Krill’s oil is rich in choline, phospholipids, and astaxanthin.

Choline is the precursor of acetylcholine which is an essential neurotransmitter. On the other hand, astaxanthin is an effective antioxidant which is responsible for preventing free radical damage. In a nutshell, besides protecting the cardiovascular system, krill’s oil plays an important role in maintaining brain health and supporting a healthy skin, vision, and weight.

Which is Better?

Is krill’s oil better or bioglan super fish oil? This is a long-standing debate and it all depends on you.

  • The fatty acids in krill’s oil are easily released into the body as opposed to fish oil but concentrations of EPA and DHA in fish oil supplements are more as compared to krill’s oil. That said, fatty acids from krill’s oil are readily absorbed by the body so krill’s oil might be a better choice.
  • On the other hand, if you are allergic to shellfish then krill’s oil is a big no-no for you.
  • If you take krill’s oil, you’ll be getting some additional nutrients which are not present in fish oil.
  • Similar to fish oil, you can buy krill oil online.
